Make Everyday Different!

Post a Comment

Wake up, work, sleep, wake up, and work again. Sometimes it is very difficult not to be trapped inside a routine.

Routine feels nice, most of the time. It fulfills your expectations for the day. You would wake up and get ready for work, get breakfast on the way to work, start working, go home from work feeling tired, then go to sleep. Everything runs as you expect it to run.

But sometimes, living an automation-like life like that makes you feel something is off. Like you are walking on a treadmill, you are going nowhere.

Sometimes you wish you had an adventurous life like Harry Potter. Coming out from your 'cupboard under the stairs' to flying a broom under a stormy sky, exercising your brain and your muscles.

Routine Kills Creativity

Humans are created with creative brains. That is how we developed into a very complex society.

Humans are valued based on what they have created. People engraved their names in the minds of others by their inventions, discoveries, arts, masterpieces, and ideas. They did what most other people didn't do. They saw what other people didn't see.

Living exactly the same thing every day prevents you from getting new perspectives. It blindfolds you from inspiring little things that might actually have just passed in front of you.

Without new input into our minds, it would be very difficult to spark our imagination and be creative. To be creative, you need to explore new things, observe from different angles, or listen to different people.

Routine Might Stop You from Dreaming The Possible

Simon Squibb, an influencer I am currently following, moves around in the streets asking people, "What is your dream?" Interestingly, people react to this question in different ways. Some people answered confidently as if they were waiting for this opportunity to come. They are ready for change. Some people were unsure whether to answer the stranger's question or not. Some people just didn't bother to answer because they were just too busy with themselves.

Your routine daily activities often hinder you from reaching your dreams. Sometimes your dream is just one foot away from you, but you decide to neglect it, thinking it is impossible to reach because of your current situation.

Like in many of Simon Squibb's cases, you just need a single moment to stop, look up to a stranger talking to you, and accept the challenge.

Find Different Simple Things Everyday

Well, the probability of us meeting Simon Squibb in real life might be very slim. But it doesn't mean that we can't make a difference.

Try to find different things every day. Do something you never or rarely do. Add a 5-minute exercise on the schedule today, for example. Or visit a friend you haven't seen for some time. Or cook a meal you have never made yourself.

If you are so busy that you cannot fit an activity into your schedule, do this: Stop for a moment and observe a particular object you haven't closely observed previously. Maybe you have your usual morning run today as in every day, but today you see different flowers blooming, or different people passing by.

Or try to do the same thing differently. For example, you are writing your usual report while drinking coffee, but today you drink a different type of coffee. If you don't find anything different, you can make a bit change in how you do something.

Start Journaling Different Things

Raditya Dika, in his podcast, talked about how every day he writes one sentence about what happens today in a journal.

In fact, I started this post after reading an entry in my journal dated last year.

What is interesting when I start to take different things to note every day: later in time, I will come across those notes and use them as an inspiration to do something. Just like what I did for this post.

Also, you won't forget to find different things every day. And on most occasions in later stages in life when you need hope, you might find your journal very helpful to see how you progress every day.

This is a simple thing. But for me, it means so much.
